"I was referred to Chris Barker by a trusted friend, and I’m so glad she guided me his way. I knew immediately he was the right fit for my personality. He was genuinely friendly, the kind of guy you could sit and chat with over coffee. He made me feel so comfortable that I forgot I was there to talk about the uncomfortable!”

How do I know if I really need counseling?

You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from counseling. Many people come to therapy because they feel overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected, or unsure how to move forward. If something in your life is affecting your peace, relationships, work, or sense of self, counseling may be helpful. There is no minimum level of pain required for counseling. If something matters to you, it matters here. Therapy is just as much about growth and understanding as it is about healing.

What if working with a male counselor feels intimidating?

A note if working with a male therapist feels intimidating:

It’s completely okay to feel unsure — safety and comfort matter deeply in therapy. In our work together, you’ll have control over pacing, boundaries, and how much you want to explore. My role is to listen with care, honor your experience, and create a space where you never feel dismissed, pushed, or minimized. Many women I work with quickly find that the room becomes a place of trust and honest healing. Similarly, many men appreciate having a space to open up at their own pace, without pressure to “perform,” fix everything immediately, or hide what’s really going on. My approach adapts to the needs of the client.

What will the first session be like?

The first session is a chance to get to know each other. We’ll talk about what brings you in, what you’re hoping for, and any questions or concerns you have. We’ll go over some logistics that are important to the process. There’s no pressure to share everything right away—therapy moves at your pace.

What if counseling doesn’t feel like a good fit?

A good therapeutic fit matters. If something doesn’t feel right, we encourage open conversation and can help you explore other options or referrals if needed. Counseling has to work for you and there are other incredible providers that we work with and would not hesitate to recommend one of them if we’re not the right fit for you.
